Joe Stasi embarks on his 25th year as head coach of the Wagner cross country and track & field programs. During Stasi’s illustrious tenure on Grymes Hill, he has guided the program to over 50 indoor and outdoor records while overseeing a two-time NCAA qualifier and eight NCAA regional qualifiers. On the heels of Wagner’s first-ever Northeast Conference indoor track & field team title in 2020, the Seahawks and head coach Joe Stasi captured the NEC Men’s Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year Award. The award recipient was determined by polling the conference’s head coaches.
2018 was a productive season. The men’s cross country squad produced its best finish at the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship, finishing third. 2017 was a banner year for Stasi and his coaching staff, as they were honored with the 2017 Northeast Conference (NEC) Indoor Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year.
On April 20, 2017, the Staten Island Track Running and Community (SITRAC) recognized Coach Stasi and his entire coaching staff for their coaching accomplishments during the indoor campaign.
A lifelong native of Staten Island, Stasi is an Adaptive Physical Education in the New York City Public School System. Stasi graduated from Kean College in Union, New Jersey in 1988 and holds two Master’s Degrees, one in Physical Education from Nova University in Naples, Florida in 1991 and the other, in Special Education from Wagner, which he received in 1999.
During his time at Kean, Stasi served as an assistant coach for the Monsignor Farrell High School (1987-90).
Stasi attended New Dorp High School running track under the Legendary Coach Bill Welsh. Joe Stasi expressed a deep connection saying, “Coach Welsh was a patient and quiet man who always encouraged us and had a real love for the sport. He pushed us just enough where we all loved the sport and never tired of it. All my friends ran track at New Dorp, we still keep in contact with each other and Mr. Welsh.”
